I'm definitely in the "Near enough B******* good enough" frame of mind on this set.
No $50- capacitors in this XO.
I've got a couple more projects in planning before I start some real speakers

I know how you feel, just putting together another pair of cabs from scrap ply for some Sony 8" woofers,
once again, Hi Qts drivers in closed boxes, thinking of using some old Rola C8Ms for the mids, and Philips tweeters to complete the retro vibe... my goal is to spend as little as possible, if it ain't in my parts bin, it won't happen...

So I'm playing with another small roadkill set using the little Jaycar woofers when my amp did funny squeeeelly stuff and majik blue smoke started to come out of both little woofers before I could hit the off button. They stink of burnt insulation but amazingly they still produce noise after cooling down. Amp is dead and burnt components on the board and it's now in the bin after removing the toroid which appears OK
Another old roadkill amp No-Name brand from Hong Kong. Was working fine when I got it but I guess you get what you pay for.

Pulled the old Playmaster amp out to the shed to give these speakers a workout and shake up some spiders.
4R load so the amp was getting a tad warm at half volume. I think they are a little bright but SWMBO hasn't yet had a listen. As far as I'm concerned they are done and finished as far as the drivers and XO are concerned. Will need new cups tho as I mismeasured the hole size.
This small Sansui driver is pretty much the same as the Peerless it looks like.
Sounds OK for a party as you can drive the bass, my little mixer has +12dB at 60 and it took that quite well but the amp was clipping so I turned it down.
A shame I couldn't find the data for the woofers but I guess I lucked out as leaky sealed boxes are very forgiving

These have been auditioned by a few friends, one is a musician, one is a sound professional and they both said the same thing. That they sounded better when I gave a 3dB boost @ 60Hz. No baffle step
I think in a room they would be fine

They look much better than my current effort, pics coming soon. Glad to see my workshop is as messy as yours, I don't feel so bad about it now... 😉
Pete I'm getting in a small skip sometime this year. Most of the mess is excess building materials for the renovations and old camping and skiing gear. Some stuff that belonged to my brother and my dad I'm having trouble getting rid of but I'll do it eventually.
I'm not sure which passion is the more expensive, but I think it might be skiing.

Here's my yoghurt container mid box - these ones have a lip, so I've screwed them down onto a styro gasket. I lined them with felt using silicone sealant as the glue, sticks like the proverbial to the blanket, added a handful of stuffing from an old pillow...

The woofers in this build are an assortment of 8" Sony drivers, various frames & cones, but they all seem to have the same magnet & voice coil assembly. The cabinets are made from free dodgy warped ply , nothing came out quite straight, so don't look too close... just got to source some xover caps and assemble

I usually use Nescafe tins because my neighbour gets them from work and I use them for other things related to ski touring and winter camping.
Very cool thread guys. I've done something similar a few times. Much easier than building the box yourself.
Currently have a pair of 15" in plyometric boxes.

No distractions today so some pics: Dodgy wiring; Q&D series crossover which seems to work well with odd drivers, just plug in appropriate impedance values to your friendly neighbourhood xover calculator; and a test run - surprisingly, they don't seem to need any tweeter attenuation, sound fairly well balanced - now for some extended listening

I've done something wrong with the XO in the boxes.
I dropped one a few centimetres and when I hooked up the amp and started playing music the amp went carazy; dropping out and coming back and before I could hit the power button it died on one channel.
I think I must have a loose wire and a short somewhere and I'll have to pull them apart and start over.
I'm having the amp looked at by somebody local, same feller who repaired the Cambridge 840E

Apparently not, that's one of the few things I can check for myself. Right channel heat sink was very hot but nothing appeared to be burnt; at least no majik smoke evident so perhaps repairable at less than the cost of a new amplifier
Fingers crossed.
I've seen a track burn out on a computer motherboard once due to a short, removed the short, bridged the burnt out track, hey presto still using it today.
