AP uses 10dB but you can only do that if your front end is very low noise and very low distortion.
I am using 6dB in my autoranger, with about 1dB of hysteresis.

I now use manual switch with 20db steps for me no issue. But some times I forget to start at maximum sur pressing and blow up the input of the soundcard. For me an automated ranger could be a solution. But maybe just ad clamp protection is enough. I do not like to make it to complicated.
So then I focus on the notch filter.

Sounds like a plan!
A tip: it is very important to select the right diodes for the clamp.
Diode leakage and non-linear capacitance can easily ruin the distortion performance of your unit.
After a lot of searching I settled on the very low leakage FDH300 diodes.
The clamp can be disabled by removing a jumper.
For extremely low distortion measurements like below -120dB I disable the clamp and be very careful 😎
When you get down to those levels, every electron counts!
