The snapshot below is from Yamaha A-1000 service manual. It's power consumption is 280W for US/Canada and General models but 680W for European and Australian models. Why such a huge difference in power consumption?
I think you will find the differences relate to different variants that have switched and unswitched AC outlets on the rear panel to connect other equipment to. Its nothing to do with how much current the amp circuitry draws.

I think that power consumption should not include outlets on the amplifier. US/Canadian model has 2 switched outlets (200W total) and 1 unswitched outlet (200W), but it's power consumption is only 280W.
If you read it as 'Max power consumption' and figure in the switched and unswitched outlets, the numbers come out right.The snapshot below is from Yamaha A-1000 service manual.
