Hey guys !
Have a Lexus is300, qite complicated to change the Headunit without screwing with factory equipment (GPS factory amp etc)
So I got myself this neat little woofer from Walmart's (Have installed it in other people's cars a while back and it was plenty)
Its a DUAL (brand) 8 inch amplified woofer ( The amp is inside the box) and it features High level inputs which is perfect in my case. So I installed all the wiring, and hooked up the L+/L- and R+/R- to the appropriate speaker wires in my trunk.
It works, but I have questions for you guys : Here are my observations :
With left and right channel plugged into the input, the GAIN on the built-in amp needs to be anywhere between atleast HALF to 100% for the sound to be considered "ok" .
If I unplug R+ OR L+ the sub's volume is 10x stronger.
If I plug R+ and R- upside down, the volume remains stronger, but its hard to tell whether it's using the right channel properly.
In general the woofer's sound when both channels are plugged in their respective places, is sort of like a Growl, it doesn't get clean bass in my opinion.
With only one channel or the right one reversed, the bass seems clearer but yet choppy.
Any clues?
thanks

Sounds like the sub is not designed to work with modern headunits that use a bridged output, and is shorting one side of the headunit out.
Modern, its a 2005 using the same stereo as the 2001, why do you call it a bridged output since these outputs go into standard speakers?
Both the +ve and -ve wires have AC voltage on them. If the sub takes the -ve as a common it will be shorting out the internal amp of the head unit.
If that were the case then wouldn't the respective speakers I'm hooked to to get the high level input stop working also? If it were shorted at the amp, since this setup uses an external amp the whole amp would turn off momentarily to protect from this so called short. I believe we're not on the right track with this argument.
