I think it was Mr. Danley that suggested using a transformer to run the cheap surplus servo motors in a DIY ContraBass. A 2:1 voltage ratio results in a 4:1 impedance transformation. Toroids are supposed to be wider bandwidth than regular transformers, but I haven't noticed any obvious problems using a conventional Hammond transformer, but I've never actually measured the frequency response.
