Hi, although I'm an electrician I have no experience with amp systems and capabilities and am after some simple advice on what type of amp I need from you to do the below,
I want to run my TV into an amp and run two pairs of speakers from the amp with the option to play through just 1 pair or both pairs at one by switching.
Also depending on the amp I would like to know the size of the speakers that I can use.
Please help.

Many typical 2-channel amplifiers in the USD$300-600 range can do that. Yamaha A-S501, Marantz PM6005, Denon PMA-720AE, Onkyo A-9377...
Thanks. What is the detail I need to look for when purchasing an amp that will allow me to do this?

The amplifier should be rated for 4 Ohms operation, which is two speakers in parallel. Around 25W/channel or more should be fine.
It should have two speaker switches on the front. There are also separate boxes just for switching the speakers that would be fine also.
