If only one output transistor on each channel is bad, it would still play, but not well....that is my guess on what is wrong - 1 or more ouput devices on those channels is blown.
There are a million other things that could also be wrong, but according to the symptoms you need to check the transistors on the ouputs, at least one on each channel is probably bad.
The problem is unrelated to a direct mechanical short IMHO.
