What problem did the 3525 solve?
It produces the drive pulses that are responsible for producing the rail voltage. The amp was producing rail voltage, wasn't it?

I was briefly explained that it's also part of the protection-circuitry/start. I wish they could sent back the failed part so I could compare but they tossed it.

The only time I see them 'fail' when they appear to be 100% OK is when the 5.1v regulator is out of tolerance. That could be part of the protection circuit that could cause a problem.
