Amp doesn't like computer :/

I've looked up all the threads i can on the amps i have, and i haven't found any similar issues to this yet, but any help would be very much appreciated.

I have two ETI 480's, and they run ok when taking the input in from my discman or stereo, but the problem occurs when i plug them into my pc, straight away R3 goes up in smoke, sorry i can't describe that in terms of input or gain stages but i'm only starting out in amplifier building, its the resistor behind the 0v connections at the front of the pcb, i can probably link to a schematic later if that helps.

I can't figure out for the life of me, why they hate input from my computer, but love it from anything else? could it be something to do with the onboard sound my computer has? would a pci sound card solve my problems? just to complicate matters, the amps used to work off the computer, but then I put all the equipment into a box i made up, and re connected it all and now it won't  .

One other thought is that the input passes through an electronic cross over unit, and the amps are running subs only, so the lo mono output of the crossover is split between both amps, could this be causing problems? and if so why only with the computer as my input and not my discman?

One other quick query i've read all about the eti 480 mods in other threads but i was curious as to whether or not there are some members here from New Zealand who can tell me where i could source new transistors, i can't find any at Dick smith or Jaycar electronics, or if someone could give me an international company on the internet i could order new transistors from that would be extremely helpful.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Bryan 🙂

Hi,

It appears you're having a problem with the grounding of your PC and amp. Try to plug both the PC and the amp in the same wall outlet and check if the outlet is grounded properly. Also, use a multimeter to make sure that the chassis of the amp and that of the PC have equal potentials.

Regards
