Hi, might be a good idea to watch him use it, & see what happens ? It sounds like he's got the gain too high & expecting too much out of it !
i've seen a few Ampegs that shut down from excessive output tube current caused by the grid connection inside the tube being intermittent. once you hit the right note at a sufficiently high volume, the grid connection vibrates loose, the tube goes into a high conduction state, and the bias current sensing circuit puts the amp into protection. while the connection is vibrating loose, there's a short burst that sounds like hard clipping before the protection kicks in.
oops... my mistake, this is a class D amp, the only tubes are in the preamp.....
still, there may be something vibration sensitive in the amp (vibration caused problems are common in combo amps) or power supply. especially check the soldering on any connectors and headers on boards, and any large components like high wattage resistors, output devices, etc...

Using a pick gives a sharper and higher output pulse.
Perhaps the amp just isn't man enough for the job if it is going into protect.
To get to clipping is over driving the amplifier.
