I also have two of the Amber 5500. One is for spare parts.
The working one has balanced I/O and a bunch of filter options for telecom measurements. The DC measurement option is a very nice feature which I use when for ex measuring noise of power supplies.
The Amber is a superb instrument!

Hi everyone I’ve just come across this old thread. On the off chance that there might be someone who can help I’m looking for the operation and maintenance manual for a recently acquired Amber 4400A. Anyone out there? Hugh
Nagra4s - let me know if you need any help with yours. DO start by checking all the power supply voltages from the regulators on the three boards.
Just turned mine on after a number of months and the sweep function is out. Oh well!

Thanks. I added it to my collection. Its a fascinating but odd instrument. You can do a lot with it. Many of its functions are or can be implemented in PC software today but were quite a project when it was designed.

Hello: I'm looking for any documentation on the "Option 054 High Speed Printing System." I recently got curious about the "option code" for my 5500, which is 21120 -- implying Option 001 (High Level Balanced Output) + Option 007 (Stereo Output), Option 101 (CCIR Weighting Filters), Option 002 (yup, IMD board installed), Option 054 (High Speed Printing System) and 488 only. So, what is this Option 054?
I Googled it and found this thread, where Charles refers to it as "tasty." I found it in the 1990 price list as the most expensive thing you could add to a 5500 at $2800 (on a base price of $6500, or $14,500 in today's money). Then I went to eBay and there was one for sale (item # 152883121633), so I bought it . . . !!
It's a "controller" of some sort w/ a pretty beat-up DB9 cable attached. Is that for the printer? My unit has no RS232 but it does have a BNC labeled "054 Mon," so apparently something was factory installed. What does that connect to . . . ??
Btw, the Option 201 (High Performance Group) is apparently required to install the last version of the firmware -- rEV 4.10. You can figure out what's in your machine by entering "7.34 + SPCL." And I only have the Issue 04 (October 84) manual (without schematics), if anyone is still offering a scan. Thanks.

The Option 054 arrived and all I got was a keyboard/controller w/ DB9 cable (clearly not RS232, photo attached). The board is 5400 490 02 (1985), which suggests to me that this was a part of the earlier Amber 5400 (still on the 1990 price list for $5900). I can find no information about this machine online. Amber was competing against the HP 8903B (now the U8903B) and adding "sweep" capability would have been attractive to some customers.
I'm half-way down a rabbit-hole on this one and would like to locate an "old-timer" w/ more details and, hopefully, some documentation. But I suspect that all that has been lost to the mists of time (and the inevitable housecleaning into the dumpster).

FWIW, Wayne Jones did a survey of test/measurement for dB magazine in three parts (May/June/July 1979) -- which can be found archive.org (minus 1979-04) and at worldradiohistory.com (in two places). In Part II, he takes off on "sweep" and in Part III he opines that test equipment will get "smart." This article also has a sidebar about the 5500 -- with a picture of what was probably the earlier 5400 . . . !!
