Hi
Its very hard to get transformers where I live, if I do find the price will be a big turn off. So I need to know if there is an alternative to transformers, I was thinking a PCB circuit design. Let me know. In my case I need enough power to drive a 100w/ch Stereo amp. Let me know

Some audio guys dabble in SMPS like anyone in electronics might, but this particular forum
is about Solid State Amplifiers. There are many forums here and you can check the power
supply one out if you are interested or look into the vendor's forums for parts and product.

From a DIY point of view, mains SMPS is really dangerous at ~400V and high current too.
This is why commercial supplies are shielded from contact and no one inexperienced
should touch them or work on them when powered. That's OK though, because there are pro.
service guys who are quite experienced with it but not as DIY products or group buys of parts.
We don't operate as a kit supply organisation but encourage members to conduct their own
purchasing on commercial threads in that forum.

Technically, we know you can have very good results with SMPS but you get another set of
problems eliminating RFI and EMR from wideband audio amplifiers and signal processing. It's not
easy designing bullet-proof gear to cope with SMPS supplies that could well have huge radiation
problems whilst seeming to work very well. This is expensive to test and responsibly ensure you
don't wreck your local broadcast reception or otherwise interfere with other people's own
equipment, so it's not something for newbs or hobby guys to tackle. There is however, an
independent DIY SMPS forum where some of our guys visit, that focuses more on the building of
supplies if you want to see more of what it takes to get started.

Because I'm lazy and just want to get on with audio, I buy certified supplies to just plug and go -
-they are cheap, shielded and approved types to recognised standards and will last sufficiently
for my Audio use anywayl. 🙂
