Can anyone help me out, im trying to find some IRFZ44N VDSS = 55V, RDS(on) = 17.5mW, ID = 49A, MOSFET, N Channel transistors for my car amp, only everywhere i find theyre discontinued, what alternatives do i have to choose from ?
Off the top of my head, IRFP044 is about the same, just a TO-247 package. If you got room for the bigger package it's an easy solytion, as it's readily available and cheap.

BUZ11 variants may also work. I've seen them interchanged in some car amps. Check the data sheets; there are small differences...

Am I correct in believing that as long as the replacement MOSFET is of larger values it should work ?
Oh a couple more questions I forgot to ask first time round,
1, what electrical equipment besides audio equipment are they used ?
2, I have some Photoelectric Proximity Switches & want to put them to use somewhere, the thing is they only kick out 150mA once triggered, is there some relay that can be switched with such a small current ? or maybe I could amplify the voltage from 150mA to a more useable voltage ?

replacement FET
Fairchild makes an equivalent HRFZ44N, available at digikey for $1.20 apiece. There are better ones you could get for increased efficiency though, like the HUF75339P3 (10mohms ON resistance), though it has a slightly higher gate charge, so there is a very very slim chance that it might not be compatible with the driver, depending on frequency and power dissipation in that driver. I would go with the latter, but then I am an experimenter...
good luck
