The bulb in my projector burnt out. It was a 500watt bulb that produced 11,000 lumens of light. Its lifespan was only rated at 50 hours though and it was $31 for a replacement. I personally didnt want to have to spend $31 every 50 hours.
I was going to just go buy a Metal Halide Ballist and bulb and get the high cost over with. I thought I would stop in a parts shop first to see if they possibly had the bulb to fit my projector. I was looking around and I found a 500 watt bulb, 11500 lumens, 3400k color temp for $3! Best of all, it lasts 2000+ hours.
At first I didnt think it would work because all of the light wasnt getting distributed evenly. My old bulb had a built in reflector that directed all of the light right at the fresnel. I messed around with the casing where the light went and decided to drill a hole in it a mount the bulb in it just to see if it would work. Sure enough, it worked great. There are no bright/dark spots on the screen, and it projects a nice bright image.
I dont think I am going to go Metal Halide after all. I have a 96" screen with a nice bright image. I think what I am going to do soon though is upgrade my lcd. I currently use a Sharp Qa-1800, but I think I am going to sell that and get a Viewsonic VE500.
Also, while I was at the parts shop. As I was leaving I noticed a bin full of fresnel lenses. They had quite a few 13" & 14" in there for $10! I've never seen any this big, especially for $10. When I go back to get a couple of extra bulbs, I am going to pick up a fresnel lens for when I upgrade my lcd to the 15" viewsonic. I will post some pictures once I purchase my new lcd.
If anyone wants me to post some pictures of how I put the bulb in and the image quality with it, just say so. If no one wants me to then I wont bother.

yup me too , me want pix 🙂
oh, do you have problems with the color? isnt it a bit yellowish? i have a 600w halogen and it yelowish and very hot, thats why im aiming for a white colored light source (HQI) but overall this is VERY cheap and a great deal. i think u could get lots of$$ if u sell ur modified OHP.

I will post some pictures once I get home from school. (Last week 🙂 then summer break). The color seems fine to me. I thought that the color temp might of been a little too low, but it seems perfectly white enough to me.
Property, the parts shop I went to was a Suprlus shop that sells a little bit of everything. They have pretty much anything you can imagine they even have old missles (like 8 foot ones). Its called SkyCraft. Its website is
www.skycraftsupplus.com
The websites not very impressive at all though.

Here are some pictures of the light bulb I am using. The model number on the light bulb is Q500CL/DC.

Tony Hawk 2 (Camera sucks in dark)
Close up of pause menu in Tony Hawk (Camera still sucks in dark) Wow, no screen door!
My projector is being help up pretty ghettoly right now as you can see. Once I have everything set up exactly how I want it, I'm going to find a way to fasten it in there better.
Image is 96" diagonal right now, it will be bigger once I have everything where I want it. 8' x 6' (H x W) once its done.
Also, just out of curiosity, are there any other teenagers in here?

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Wow, someone else from Orlando!!! I was born and raised there, but I live about an hour north in Ocala now. What highschool do you go to? Anyway I'm new to this board, just waiting for a good lcd buy to come my way so I can start building. I'll have to check out skycraft next time in town, maybe I'll go with your cheap light source to do my preliminary setup.
Deafcon I goto Lake Brantley High School. I goto ocala a lot though to going biking there, they have very nice trails. If you dont want to spend $100 for a metal halide (which I didnt) then they way I went will be fine. I'm very happy with it.
Poohbear the bulb is about 2" long and about 3/4" wide.

I was just wondering if you bought the Viewsonic VE500 and if it was easy to pull apart. I'm also looking at this monitor!
