I can't tell if you like this topology or not, or just dont favor cascode stages.
What would you recommend to further this approach (with it's given linearity and potential for a lot of gain)?

I learnt early in the day not to have any particular attachment to any circuit, this allows me to have a clear head when examining what it can or cannot do. If it sounds great well and good, if it doesn't, find out why, move on....
