I dismantled my Altec 601C's defective HF section the 3000 (suffix unknown) to make some pictures.
It wasn't easy, because somebody glued the driver in the housing.
Here is the diaphragm assembly, which can be lifted off the magnet,
also the magnet with the heavy white coiled wire, which purpose unknown to me.

I believe the HF driver is called a 3000H. It is a horn with 6 cells, looking at it from the front?? I had (2) of those that I sold on Ebay for outlandish bucks with the 3000C crossovers. I think the crossover freq. was 3Khz. You might try Ebay.
As an Altec owner for over 20 years, I still don't understand the demand for the older Altec drivers. Yes, they were nice and sounded pretty good but somewhat flawed overall, IMHO.

Voice coil info.
The Voice coil OD 19.36mm L2.29mm , two rows of 20 turns D: 0.1mm, the lead outs are the same wire as in the coil it self, no connection there. This driver don't have to burn to go bad, the coil lead out sooner or later will brake, as it did in this driver. The separation of the diaphragm from voice coil caused by the solvents I had to use to get out the driver from the housing.

Thanks stoc005,
I am not interested to replace the horn. This was an educational exercise what to expect when I try to fix a 601D (white) HF section. I have two 601D's with one defective HF. I bought this 601C (green) off ebay for 60 bucks for that purpose. The low frequency portion (an Altec 414) is good. I was thinking eventually replace the HF driver with one new 3/4" neodium dome tweeters (which would last forever), cut to the right size to fitt in the cavity of the horn.

Follow up.
Here are the dimensions of the 3000 driver cavity and one possible candidate to replace the defective Altec driver, the Dayton ND20FA-6 0.75 inch Neodymium Dome Tweeter (less than $10). If you have access to a lathe it would be a breeze to modify the housing to fit in the Altec.

Just a guess, but I think they magnetized the structure with that wire.
Somebody, was it John Eargle (name dropper!) told me that Altec used reject mic capsules for this tweeter?
David S.
in any case - dismantled AlNiCo assembly needs re-magnetizing procedure
Thats right. Discharge a big capacitor through that wire.
David S.
speaking of that - is there anywhere schematic for magnetizer ?
I certainly forgot what I already knew about that issue .....

Thanks for the info. You would need a BIG capacitor to do that work.
When I was working on 288's , the whole assembled unit was put in the magnetizer (size of a compact car),securely so it would not fly away when the red push button was pushed,🙂 and Bang the driver was ready.
Yes, they do use an Altec microphone diaphragm and assembly. You can contact Bill Hayes at Micromike Labs in S.Calif. if you want them rebuilt. Not sure of the cost but since they generally worth $300-400, its probably worth it. I sold mine, in perfect condition for $350 but would have rebuilt them had they not.

Altec remag
Hello, I have a strong interest here since I have some pairs of 416, 414 and 806, 808 that I would like to be remagnetized since I measured some discrepancies. Shipping costs to & from US is too high due to the weight. If I had a better understanding of the correct procedure I could probably ask a company here in Switzerland to do the job (they may not be specialized in speakers). Any input will bw much appreciated. Thanks in advance, JP
I read somewhere that 1MW in 10mS pulse is involved
