Altec 1202a, different CDs?

Looking at buying a pair of 1202a speakers with 422 woofers (kinda like a 418B) and 807 CD’s on 811 horns. The two 807 drivers are different, one black an the other green. They are not quite the same, one is an 807-8A, the other 807Z and the witing terminals on the latter look ‘strange’. Makes me wonder what I’d be getting - Thoughts ?

Idea is to eventually re-use for mini Vott.

'A' = Altec systems, 'Z' = stripped down for various reasons, i.e. cheap terminals, different color and/or different stickers /stampings such as an aftermarket retailer's pt.# such as for Heathkit

All you/we care about is matching driver model and diaphragm #s with these being updated/replaced, some of which had multiple ones and/or a 'one size fits all' replacement.

A long ago now small format CD 'cheat sheet', i.e. doesn't include any GPA updates

Thanks GM.
I read that these are not Altec's finest drivers or enclosure, some comments say that they are junk and suitable for guitars, other comments about AlNiCo discharging and all sorts of costs to fix them - and best just pass on this and find something better! - have I over-reacted on the negative sentiment our there or do these parts deserve some love and have potential for an enjoyable home-use pair of speakers if re-built into something more like a mini-A7-VOTT ?

Late 60's era, so a whole lot of musical history emanated from them, ergo playing then contemporary vinyl, etc., recordings you'll get a nice double dose when 'cranked', otherwise will need to keep peak power either quite low or SET tube driven for a 'colorful' rendition of everything else; basically, if you can see them move at the LP it's (euphonically) distorting.

FWIW, me n'others back then did way more VoTT/HIFI Altec speakers (mostly college dorms, off campus apts., 'garage' bands) using its MI drivers due to a dramatic cost difference to its VoTT drivers, so YMMV, etc..

So, if I got your drift these drivers aren't going to beat out a modern design for "hi-fi" but as long as the drivers are adequately horn loaded for minimal cone movement and not run too hard & low, they should be good to go with a tube amp for casual use indoors. Wheel them out on the deck at BBQ time and they'll show a different face, perhaps even suitable for the event at hand...

Cabinets look serviceable, but if I want to horn load the woofer A7-style for some attempt at hi brow listening, then the original cabinets become left over parts. I wonder if these cabinets worth anything ? Hopefully have time tomorrow to connect them up and see what kind of party potential they have. I got the speaker leads w original plugs too.

Thx - Will avoid undersizing as I don’t want to misalign the horn, so I’ll look at the A7-8 and the Valencia but as you’ve previously advised the woofer can perform with lower distortion if horn loaded. Putting the 811 in the BR mouth and turning upside down looks to be a good option - attached photo is the 511 horn though.

What are consequences of vertically oriented woofer horn flares (taller-narrower) vs traditional horizontally oriented woofer flares (wider box) ?

Thx for the link, although not looking at corner use despite benefit to lower extension as my house dictates that I want more flexibility for positioning, including moving speakers onto the deck thus allowing the neighbours to share my enthusiasm during an occasional back yard bbq

This is for raised apps, i.e. near stage, 'flown', etc.. On a floor in home is a 'mixed bag' and only known one person to use it this way, but only because he normally did his 'critical' listening propped up/prone on a thick shag rug, thoroughly 'medicated', so as always YMMV, etc..
