I just fixed, yesterday..a Sony Xplod amp...the only thing wrong with it was a copper rail...in the power supply section had a bad solder joint...I have always found this in all electronics by looking with a jewelers loop...or a 50 mm camera lens I use a a magnifying glass...

And another way was to turn it on...in total darkness...and move around..or touch components with something non conductive until you hear a crack...or a spark and then see were it came from...

Home transistors typically are higher voltage, lower current than the ones used in car amps.

I recommended the only transistors that I'd expect to work reliably.

The total power output is determined by a lot of things but mainly the rail voltage and the load driven. The rest of the components have to be able to handle the current and power dissipation for the given rail voltage and load.

OIC...so what happens to all the old school amps laying around..I guess just like computers...they get scrapped and taken apart then make it to the landfill...ewaste...what a shame..There has to be someone in the usa that has these trans...

PacParts may be able to get them. They don't have them listed as discontinued but they're about $20 each. Add about $10 for shipping.

Sometimes you have to find replacements that will work. Sometimes you scrap it. If the amp is valuable, you may keep trying newly developed transistors to see if you can find something that works if nothing is currently available. The transistors that I suggested work in the place of most of the output transistors with Japanese part numbers.
