I have a guy looking for something that will do old style rock music nicely, and am thinking of maybe something like an MTM using all SB Acoustics drivers
SB17NRX x2 + SB25STC. (I do have a pair of Vifa DX25's on the shelf I could use as the tweeter instead).
I haven't seen much around using the SB17 yet, and was wondering how much bass one might get from a pair of them.
So, has anyone used them in this sort of configuration yet ??
If so, box sizes, porting etc would save me some work!

Andy, Unibox gives me 35L tuned to 35Hz for a single unit, for 'rock' bass with 2 units, 60L @ 38Hz gives a broad low hump below 100Hz for an F3 of 35Hz...
here's a closed box using the 6" and SB tweeter:

May be Thor alike transmission line? QTS is a bit low but I've build similar to Thor TL with Usher 8945A and the bass was astounding.
Just an idea.🙂

After further discussions, seems like we are back to square one.. He is more something like a WMTMW arrangement. There are a few floating about , but mostly with Dayton RS drivers. eg Khanspires
hmmmmm.. some thinking needed.

a pair of these in 100L might be OK if a box that big passes WAF:

Joe's Elsinore could be the ticket as not hugely expensive and a mature clever design. I'm sure it comes with a big sound and is loved by many. Drivers are easy to get and not expensive and the crossover not crazy. There's a thread around here on them.

Admitting this may expose me as a simpleton, but that rolling smiley face made me laugh!
Andy I know this is a little off the mark, but would your friend consider a moderately sized two-way, or is it WMTMW for sure? I know soft cones have fallen out of favor a bit, but I find this midbass very interesting, and have wanted to do something with it for a while:

Personally I like the sound of poly cones, though I guess they give up some detail. To me, they seem handle distorted guitars and heavy vocals well, probably because they smooth out the harshness a bit with their high internal damping.
Anyway, with the driver above, you might be able to pull off a 2nd order crossover with the right tweeter, though I'm not sure to what extent that would limit maximum SPL. Plus that phase plug looks cool!

would you be able to supply details on this build. i have four 8945A's that i am trying in various configs.

Thanks Peter,
I'll show him that one when he comes around next.

Ask Peter, that's just how I think.

Yeah, I like poly's too. and have looked at that driver a few times, but shipping them to down-under costs so I haven't got around to using them.
He has an open plan house, so a standard 2-way is going to struggle a bit. + he wants some 'grunt' !

I can but not in this thread. Don't want to pollute Andy's.🙂
i would go for bigger woofers...I have a guy looking for something that will do old style rock music nicely, and am thinking of maybe something like an MTM using all SB Acoustics drivers

remember old rock was mixed and listened on big speakers.

Each time I meet Andy I have to keep tabs on his head going all over the place. 😉
