All George's OPT testing leads to this unanswered question

And, I should add, a few searches...

Is there any way to tell if the $80/pair Edcor GXSE-15 are at all comparable to the $150/pair Transcendar 10 Watt I already have?

Best info I could find was that the GXSE were as good as the more expensive CXSE except in the lowest bass. The Transcendars seem to have very good apparent bass.

I'm also interested

I'm also interested to see any testing or decent comparisons people have made between the GXSE and typical popular choices (Transcendar, XSE, CXSE). It seems to me that being the middle of the road edcor transformer option they would be a good choice for a lot of people but most seem to go for the smaller XSE or larger CXSE.

After a year of looking and thinking I have finally decided to build a Simple SE with the GXSE15/8/5. I live in New Zealand so shipping is at least as much as the actual transformers! I've been patiently waiting and have found a power transformer locally which is close enough to spec which has taken a good chunk of the cost out. Now I just need to wait 6 weeks for the edcors...

Hi,

A friend built a SSE with GXSE15 transformers, and the amp sounded very nice.

@BillEpstein, no experience with Transcendar OPTs, but I have read plenty of positive comments from folks who are using them. The 10 watt Transcendar SE OPTs are bigger and heavier than the Edcor GXSE.

Hi!

I just upgraded my SSE XSE amp to GXSE after five years with the XSEs. Massive improvement in depth and warmth of bass. I have 193J choke and motor run cap which makes the same difference IMO. Add the two together.....well just pour yourself a glass of wine, turn off the lights and enjoy....🙂

Finished my sse

Just an update: I have finished my sse for now, this is with the GXSE15 opt. I have nothing to compare it to apart from the Yamaha rxv663 that powered the speakers previously. I haven't tested back to back but the sse definitely sounds better. I expected it to be more dynamic and more detailed but I didn't expect such good bass at normal to fairly loud listening levels. I think the bass is better than what I got from the Yamaha.

This is driving 87db tritrix speakers I built a year ago and using el34s. I've also have an under powered transformer so only getting 370v b+ at 40ma bias. I'm stoked with it! Thanks George!

Some time I'll get a bigger PT and see what it can really do.

That's what I was looking for, many thanks. Next week is the Third Wednesday and I will order them.

XSE to GXSE would definitely be an improvement (at least in the low end). However, I suspect strongly that the the primary inductance of the GXSE is inferior to the Transcendar offering. You do get something for the money, after all. A more appropriate comparison would be to the full-on Edcor CXSE series of similar power capability. Talk is cheap, whiskey costs money...

I built a point to point SSE that has the Transcendars. I'll put the Edcors on the original and sell it.

Are folks saying that the Transcendars/CXSEs sound noticeably better than the GXSEs?

Please NOOOO, I don't want know there's something better out there, which I will be forced to buy, only to pay insane delivery costs and import duties again 😉

What's the model number of the Transcendars?

In search of decent sound in a world that favours ease and convenience over quality....

Ask yourself this question, "Are you enjoying your music playing through your SSE as it is currently configured ?"
If your answer is yes then pour yourself a glass of wine and sit back, relax and listen your favourite music.
Trying to keep up with the Jonses in the hi-fi world will soon bankrupt you.

I can't say anything obout the Trancendars, not having heard an amp using them.
Regarding the Edcors, I have two SSE's, one using the CXSE opts and the other using the GXSE opts. The former
betters the latter in the extreme low end, for the rest of the frequency range whatever difference there is doesn't
make me ENJOY MY MUSIC more listening to one or the other. My second SSE is for the use of lower voltage tubes
such as 6V6, 6F6 and others.

Relax and enjoy your SSE, maybe sometime in the future you can consider 'upgrading'.

I am looking at Trancendars in the UK. The prices look very good compared to the Edcors. At least when shipping to Europe is taken into account.
When you talk about the 10watt Trancendar, what model number are you talking about?
Is it unshrouded.
Does this make a difference apart from looks?
On the site that I am looking at (Untitled Document) recommended by emi23, all the shrouded SE OPTs are over 30 watts.
