Align for time, or for phase?

I have a related question. In another discussion with phase_accurate, I mentioned that I was planning a two way crossover at around 500 Hz. Highs go to the plasma driver I'm working on, and low frequencies go to the Aleph-X driving ... something which I've yet to build. My question is how to go about choosing the low end driver, and how to align the whole thing. Dipole or monopole, a single driver or say two one above and one below the plasma, or an array, how do I decide what will be the best match with the plasma? I'm willing to sacrifice some efficiency for lower distortion, as I'm building the AX for 100 W channel and my room is not big (haven't even thought of how to deal with reflections yet).

Not the cheap corona discharge projects you see around the web, real glow discharge plasma (based on the Hill Plasmatronic speakers design, picture of those here). As that's already discussed elsewhere in the forum, I don't want to repeat here.
