I just built the Aleph P 1.7 clone and it sounds really nice. I placed the volume control at the output side because that's what the original had. Why is it placed at the output side and not the input side as do most of the other preamps? Thanks.

hello. that is because its natural destortion.
If you put the volume on the output (and you need to design for that from the beginning...) you get the distinct advantage of attenuating your noise floor down the softer you play your amp. At low levels, your background noise will be very, very low.
