FINALLY, the two replacement 2SJ74s have arrived.
Could I have have damaged the originals by connecting the board up to a PSU with a bit of charge on the caps ?

The Aleph J is now setting up as it should.
When I de-soldered the 2SJ74s from the faulty channel I found that one of the legs on one of the devices had become detached from the TO92 case. I didn't spot that when I was investigating.
With two new devices the amplifier will now set-up as it should.
I'm yet to put audio through it.
