Here is a description of Alastair Robertson-Aikman's arrangement of 4 Quad ESL 63 speakers. I wonder if he still has the same system.
".....here's a bit about how his two
pairs of speakers are set up. The main pair faces forward, while the
second pair - positioned behind the front and close to side wall - fire
to the sides and produce very little signal; the additional speakers are
there just to augment and fill-in the sound."
I remember seeing a picture of this setup in either Hi-fi Choice or HiFi News & Record Review many years ago.
I was wondering if anyone here has tried a similar setup. (If only I had four Acoustats.)
Would this work only in very large rooms like his?
Would a similar arrangement be effective for tall speakers like the Acoustats or Magneplanars?

I see no benefit to that idea... it's rather expensive for some presumed ambience... real stacking of 63s defeats the entire raison d'etre for the design.
Might be cool to make a GIANT version of the 63!! 😀
Whenever I have heard the 63s they sound like they are "down the hall" anyhow, to a great extent... so I'm not sure why anyone would want any more "depth" than they seem to already have.
Others may have had different experiences with them however.
The old Hafler "matrix" center channel seems like a better idea...?

i don't have the guts to do that. I know about the arrangement, also read the articles a very long time ago.
Considering that a few inches difference in vertical position have such a great impact, i've been very sceptical about stacking 2 of them. (i can not imagine anyone running the 63 without the stands)
The only attraction for me is adding a second set of ESL63's through a Xover as subs for that little bit extra. I haven't stumbled on a decent set, and 99 of 100 a single set is plenty loud for me, so it's still on the Santa list.( i sometimes wonder what size living room people have or what kind of job they had in their previous life)
