Hello i have an akai 1730 dss quadraphonic reel to reel
in good condition, but it doesn`t pull the tape.
you have to pull the reel with the hand to begin
to play.

Hi gp37,
There are normally three potential problems with the old Akai R-R units.
1.) The grease has dried - clean the old grease and relubricate.
2.) The belts are "worn" - find replacement belts from a second source.
3.) The micro switch contacts are bad - Replace, they are a standard item.
Other things to look for are worn bearings, the capstan bearing is critical. A bad pinchroller is trouble. Sit it on a table or clean flat surface where it touches the tape. There should be no gap in the center. You can get away with a very small gap. Watch that the entire tape path is clean and not worn. DO NOT ATTEMPT to correct the head alignment - ever, unless the heads show zero wear (are new).
