I purchased this on ebay for $100. After replacing the main drive belt the deck works fine except that it can't recognise a type 1 or 2 tape and hence can only auto calibrate a metal tape. The detect switches are working ok so it must be a dry joint or HR connector. The wiring loom looks really messy and ditto everything else inside.
Is there anyone who owns one of these beasts that's done a service and might know what common faults there are to look out for.

Thanks. That looks like a good place to start.
I've also downloaded the service manual so I'll take the deck apart tomorrow.
