Aircraft PA quality

Everytime I fly anywhere I find myself having to stick my fingers in my ears as soon as any announcement is made on the PA system. The quality is so bad and so distorted that to me is unbearable.
In the last few years I have been on a variety of different types of airliner and the sound is "always" extremely bad.

Why is this? How can they get it so wrong? :scratch1:
 
with aircraft audio systems, and mic audio for radio communications for that matter is band pass filtered from 300HZ to 3KHZ. reason being is that most of the voice intelligence is in that range. some of the newer aircraft audio systems (flight, service and cabin interphone) are done by DSP (still in the limited range)
 
2 other things -- first -- older pilots will remember the VOX clicking in or out so will tend to eeeeelonnnngggate words to keep the red light on -- second -- eating the mic comes from trying to eliminate background noise. Some of the mics should be sprayed with listerine between useage.
 
The loudspeaker you are listening to is designed to be as light weight and efficient as possible. What do you think it costs in fuel to fly one ounce a million miles?

Then the amplifier is as light as possible. So a heavy output transformer is not used.

Of course the input power voltage is at 400 cycles so you really don't want the audio to go that low. You think 60 cycle hum is bad, 400 cycle whine will drive you nuts!

Then there is the advantage you really are noticing the messages. So the system works! 🙂
