I had high hopes as well and do believe it is possible to make a complete black box assessment covering all relevant aspects of an amplifier. It was when it was suggested that the assessment should consider implementation aspects that it derailed in my eyes. For me, this is the only aspect that needs to be ditched in order for the ultimate goal, of this very good - if not one of the most interesting here, to be met.

Original post and document is pretty straight forward. Like it
If the amplifier is well designed it scores high.
Many areas to cover to have a good score.
Aside from certain technology types. Where it would be impossible to score against higher performing amplifiers or different technology base.
Then the technology type categories make complete sense. looks fine to me.
Reality is there is no imaginary magic romance nonsense sales hype " telling" people what is good or not.
It scores high or doesn't within realistic categories. Stop crying or bluffing with magic talk. Submit a amplifier get a score.
I just love cold hard reality.
Like high school " fights" blah blah blah bunch of yelling and talking. Step in the ring, ding goes the bell and you start swinging, no talk. Get scored

If one is to asess amplifiers, why does it matter how they are built... i.e. create "categories"? Its beyond me..
Cold hard reality doesn't take Class X type or others aspect into consideration... thats the nostalgic dept. 😉

You mean tube amps get scored in the tube amp category ?
Im not having to much difficulty understanding

Yes - and some amp category would get some sort of "forgiveness factor" to compensate for their innards... so that all categories could be compared with a single number score - like ASR sinad 5W 1kHz... but much a "better" one thanks to a multi property weighted score... as I understood it - if I recall correctly 🙂

I recall having some reservations. E.g.: you design and build an amplifier with XYZ criteria in mind, and then you make the mistake of submitting it for evaluation. For instance, you release the schematics into the public domain, and people then do this "Scientific Method" or AI kind of barrage of automatic tests, spitting out a result based on "common knowledge", "verified facts", "established science" (if you get it, you get it) and in the process, the subtleties of the author's reasoning get lost or overlooked.
In the end, it doesn't really matter (as the song goes). If it's a personal endeavour, you can prioritise all kinds distortion mechanisms to match your hearing. Whatever grates is eliminated. If it's commercial or somewhere in-between, then any objective assessment will probably be too objective for the whims of the market.
