Aem 6010 Preampifier.

Hi All.

I have noticed on this site that there have been some discussions regarding this preamplifier.

This was designed by Mr. David Tilbrook back in 1985, as part of a feature article in the now defunct AEM magazine.

This preamp was designed as a no-holds-barred “best that he could do” project.

I have built several of these units, and I can say that it is one of the best units, in particular the mc / mm low-level stage.

I was designed as a modular system, with separate boards for the line level and phono stage.

The phono stage was designed in an era when high quality op-amps that are available today did not exist back then.

That probably explains the complex and discrete type design.

Over the years, I have lost count of how many mc / mm preamps I have played with. I kept coming back to this unit, and in fact has been part of my main listening system for over 10 years.

What immediately strikes me with this phono stage is the quietness and its tonal neutrality. It seems to bring out the best (and the worst in some cases) out of vinyl.

The preamp has been used in conjunction with an Oracle Delphi / SME V / Ortofon MC2000 and it absolutely shines.

Of recent times, I have had to relocate the turntable quite a distance away from the main system, due to my little boys wanting to “play” with it.

This has resulted in the turntable being almost 9m away from the preamp. This is a ridiculous distance for any phono lead.

The loss in the upper mid / highs was immediately noticeable. I tried numerous passive step-up devices, but none were satisfactory.

I am presently building the mc /mm stage as a stand-alone unit, and locate it directly next to the turntable, and then fed it into one of the aux line in on the pre-amp.
This should overcome the cable losses and provide sufficient drive voltage.

I have tried to attach the Schematic of this unit for information and hopefully some discussion, but unfortunately I am having difficulty.
I will try as a separate post.

If anyone is interested, please drop me a line and I can send you the entire 3-part installment, including the PCB layouts. (Provided it does not get out of hand!!)

Cheers,

George.
