Can anyone suggest reference material that would be suitable for one totally unfamiliar with electronics that would lead to the understanding of amp circuitry and the like?

There is no one particular book or books when your just starting out. Theory first, learning about electricity, where it comes from, how it 'works' on a sub-atomic level...."valence bands" electron "flow", "the circuit"...then onto 'Ohms Law', "Thevenin", "Norton".........then there are those silly little kiddies "Kits" whereby it's a hands on affair. These kits were designed to hold interest of children. You however can buy a "Proto board"..there are cheap proto boards or, I like the real fancy proto boards....A prototype board, where you design circuits from the super-simple to the complex.....always useful, even when your to the "advanced" level. Buy a Multi-meter...be aware of the two types which each have their disadvantages AND advantages of both types....Analog & Digital, buy both, you'll need both rather quickly. In order you'll need, some books, a power Supply, proto-board/s, "hook-up wire", Analog meter, Digital meter, nice calculator ......& have at it. Lots to learn....if your like the proverbial "sponge" to knowledge it will go quickly.
