Advice on PS conversion

Hello, Im interested in converting a Chinese CD player to 110V. Ive been told that its transformer doesnt have dual primaries, therefore no easy conversion. I was told this by the North American importer, so this information is suspect. So, worst case scenario, how difficult is it to have a proper PS installed. Any and all advice on cost and competent modders is very much welcomed. PS. step down trans is out. Thanks, JK

There are a couple of options that you could do. One would be to replace the current transformer with a new transformer which has a turns ration from primary to secondary which is half of the original. (Of course I am assuming the the problem is that Chinese supplies are 220V, 50Hz). The transformer will barely know the difference between 50Hz and 60Hz. Another option would be to add a second transformer equal in size (rating) to the one which is currently in the unit. You could then parallel the primaries and series the secondaries. You would have to tap into the existing circutry and maybe cut a few traces but it should be straight forward if you have electronics experience. If you have never tinkered or designed before I recommend buying a North American unit and not opening the chassis.
