I'm trying to repair a lunched woofer section in
a Powered Advent Loudspeaker (PAL) 1970's
vintage), for a friend (make that "an anxious
friend").
I found one set of schematics at

but the quality is so poor I can't read them.
Can anyone lead me to a source? I noticed a
thread in the DIY loudspeaker forum from early
'02, started by paulb from Calgary, who had a
set of these... and a service manual. If you're

The amplifiers in the Large Powered Advent tended to blow-up a lot (we didn't sell a single pair hat didn't blow up at least a couple times -- quite nice when they were working thou)... if i had a blown pair i'd be considereing replacing the output section with a nice little chipamp....

Two things:
1. pcompton, above, now has a detailed schematic including some service bulletin mods (maybe keep them from blowing up?). He's just restored his to pristine condition.
2. I'm now listening to my former Advent Powered Loudspeakers that have had their amplifiers removed and am using an external active crossover and 4-channel power amp. Probably will replace the amp with chip amps instead.

I'd be very interested in the details of your active crossover. I have a pair of original Advent Loudspeakers that I have been considering biamping with a quad mono Leach amplifier I built.
I have measured the response of the stock passive crossover and it results in a huge overlap between the woofer and tweeter. The woofer rolls off very slowly and has a pretty jagged acoustic response. The rise in tweeter impedance at resonance interacts with the crossover to actually raise the drive voltage at about 750 HZ.
What I would like to try is to take into the account the actual response of the drivers and come up with a 4th order Linkwitz-Riley acoustic response crossover in the 1.2-1.5 KHz area. This would dramatically reduce the excursion seen by the tweeter and increase its effective power handling. It would also reduce the intrusion of the woofers breakup modes into the tweeters range.
Anybody else have any experience with biamping Advents or modifying Powered Advents?
