That is a lie.. if you have to little power you will burn it out faster with distortion. you should always have more power than the sub is caple of handling. it is called head room and distortion factor. if i were you id power it with a better amp than a 100watt one.

lol. What?

I've ALWAYS run my drivers with less power than the sub is capable of handling. I've NEVER run into any problems.

It is called not making sweeping generalizations that further confuse the issue.

If I listen to my super duper 1244241w rms subwoofer at 90db all day long why the hell would I need a "better amp than a 100w one?" Since when does "better" mean more power. Wow. Seriously, not to flame you, but if you don't know what you're talking about don't use words like "ALWAYS" and "LIE" in your posts.

Do you work for Monster Cable or just like them?

Underpowered and overdriven amps can, and will blow tweeters, due to distortion artifacts, especially as they are not usually filtered out by a passive crossover. However, with a low frequency driver, especially one like the Brahma, running it from your 100w amp, this clipping will sound horrible, but won't hurt a thing.

The nady XA 900 that justinc recommends looks pretty decent. The specs sure look right. Looks like it will put 400w into each voice coil running in stereo mode. At 38.5lbs its not exactly a lightweight. I doubt that you will find something that capable (from a power standpoint) for less.

To Cal Weldon:

Yep. 1000g. It models nicely on LspCAD, and it is what Adire recommends for a 20Hz tuning. Seems like a lot when you turn the PR on it's side and see what all that weight does to the suspension.

Great, pimkmouse, said it correctly. He has two important qualifiers on his statement:

"Underpowered AND OVERDRIVEN amps CAN ...."

I really wouldnt suggest powering the tumult with 100 watts or even 200 watts in a permanant application. If you want to use 100 watts or 200 for sub-bass and you can spend 500 dollars or more on drivers alone I'd suggest numberous smaller drivers (maybe 4 adire extremis6's which would still be underpowered!)
I'd imagine if used for bass alone it would definately be "fast" and you can count on getting low.

I did some winISD graphs. The FR graphs of a single Tumult in a 5cubic ft enclosure versus 4 Extremis 6's in a 5 cubic ft enclousure, both tuned to 20hz. the graphs of SPL with 100watts and 200watts imput are within + 2dB from 0 to 80hz. The Tumult rolls off due to inductance, but the extremises go up to 5K or so.

I cant wait for the arrival of my extremis midwoofers. Fat tuesday!

Of course, depending on the style of music you listen to (quantity of bass, compression / dynamics etc) and how horribly overdriven the amp is, it is certainly still possible to burn the sub voice coil if there is a dc path from amplifier to driver. To state the obvious, if the driver is off center due to electrical input and not moving, that voice coils is getting mighty hot.
