They do not oscillate. An oscillator reqires phase shift AND gain >1. These have only one of those qualities.

I doubt it.
If the transformer is hefty enough and you want to build it that way than that's fine by me.
You're not overlooking anything really,but I'm a bit worried about sound degradation of that lovely preamp.

One Last Question
I just want to say thanks to everyone who's contributed, you guys have helped me a lot. I've settled on the headwize ckt- not too basic, not overly complex, and allows midrange adjustment.
Just one last question- can I just feed this with the preamp and run the output to the power amp? I.E. treat it like an outboard piece of equipment? Or will it need to be integrated mid-ckt?

Frank, that circuit is on page 668 in the RDH, 4th ed.
It's called the "Two-stage, Universal Tone Control."
They have a freq response graph for it too. Good stuff.
