adding extra surround channels... 11.1?

Is there any existing equipment that would allow me to extract extra surround channels to my setup? I recently upgraded to an onkyo 7.1 htib system and it performs excellent for my tastes at least for the time being.

what I would like to do is have extra rear channels to run exciters on the rear wall in my living room, like 6 to 8 of them. Being rear surround channels I'm not expecting audiophile quality but I don't want to just duplicate the rear channels. Ideally I would also like to run front wide channels to compliment the existing 2 height channels. So far I haven't been able to find anything that can give me the extra channels. So far it one like my only hope is to get an FPGA or microprocessor and run the rear channels into a custom DSP which would split the source into as many rears as I need. I realize that nothing I watch is going to be mixed for multiple discrete rears so it will all have to be matrixed out of the existing rears but it seems doable... If it's worth doing is a whole different story. Anyone have any thoughts on this? How do people get setups that have more than 7.1/9.1?
