Hi,
I have a rega planet 2000 cd player. I'm not that technically knowledgeable or inclined to mod it myself but I had thought of taking it to a local technician to ask if they can add a digital input to it.
This, I'm thinking would give me a great quality dac for my computer.
Good idea or not?
I've tried a couple of portable DACs like the HRT streamer pro but the sound really doesn't compare to listening to cds through my rega.

I doubt its within a typical technician's expertise to add such an input. It would require a sample rate converter too as the CD player has its own master clock. A considerable amount of design work would be needed, its not just adding a couple of extra chips.

Try a Behringer Ultramatch, upsampling to 24/88.2. They are a pretty cheap pro-audio DAC (it cannot cope with clipped CDs however - so no modern pop!).

Thanks, ok that might be what I'm looking for. I can go straight from my macbook or iphone into that. Seems very cheap.
Actually for the convenience factor, I'm happy to put up with a bit less than what I got with the rega. I can always upgrade the DAC in future too as the technology matures more.
Sorry for my ignorance here. Just to clarify:
The Behringer has a DAC in it so I don't even need the CD player?
or I should connect the Behringer to the Behringer to the Rega, to use its DAC?

Yes, so no.
Did you not read the link above?
After the first reply and then looking up the product, it seemed like it would function as a DAC.
I checked out the link above and from what I can tell, the guy is talking about it being used as a link between a cd player and a DAC.

Then read it again 😉
There are several photos of the DAC (one with a red arrow pointing at it) and quite a bit of text devoted to describing said AKM DAC.
Really, you can't miss it - have another look.
