Add pre-amp outputs to AVR (Sony STR-DN1080)

Well, the guy that tapped the balanced output before the amp stage said he lost VOLUME CONTROL, so I would assume the volume control is not in the DAC stage but in the amp stage.

I have the service manual If anyone with enough knowledge care to check.

My intension was to bypass the Volume Control with the intent that my then PS Audio Stellar Gain Cell DAC would handle Volume duties. The other 4 channels (in 5.1 mode) would either be handled by external amplifiers with either inline (or built-in) level control or just use the remaining built-in Amps)Speaker jacks of the STR-DN1080.

Hope that helps you Guys.

Just did a quick measurement with my Scope, and the signals in the ribbon cable is before the Main Volumen control... and they are also DC biased at +2.5 Volt.. This is also what the datasheet for AKM4458 states.

In my setup, I would like to have the FL, FR and Center channel after the volumen control, but before the main amps. And at the moment I only need single ended RCA output.

Thanks mga2009 🙂

The way to get the signal after volumen control would be at the input of the Power Amp. C1710 has the Front Left Channel signal. C1760 has the FR signal. Center Channel is found on C1810.

If one where to connect an RCA cable to this, one shall remember that this is also the input to the power amp.

A buffer circuit would be prefered to place between the signal and out to the RCA connector. A buffer circuit would also protect the Volumen control IC, against ESD discharge.

a not to large series resistor would also protect a bit.

Cheers
