ADAT codec building

I've built an ADAT receiver and transmitter using an Altera FPGA and the Toshiba TORX/TOTX177 devices -- the first part of the project is described at my site, and I'm writing the rest of it up over the next couple of weeks.

If you want to know more about the workings of the ADAT protocol, the place to start is the ADAT patent. It's not all that detailed, but it gives you a pretty good idea how the Alesis implementation works. There's another (more overview/context) description at eMusician.

As rfbrw pointed out, there's a chipset available from Wavefront Semiconductor (previously part of Alesis). If you're not using an FPGA in your circuit, this chipset is definitely the way to go. You can get the parts in singles from Profusion. Of course, if you are using an FPGA, writing ADAT rx/tx cores is the way to go. Apparently Wavefront do have a reference IP core, but it probably costs a fair bit.
