Hi
I am thinking about building myself a pair of open baffle speakers. I am thinking about using my two crown xls 2002 amps and my moon 240i to drive them. The crown amps driving 12" woofer + 8" woofer and the moon for a fullrange driver. Crown xls have built in 24db LR filters so for example lowpass 250hz for the 12" and lowpass 500hz for the 8" and maybe a passive hipass between the moon and the full range driver. Is it all all possible to make this work? I can us EQ in roon if necessary.
My primary idea was to sell my moon and buy myself a minidsp 4x10hd and buy myself another cheaper amp for fullrange, alternatively two stereo amps for midrange and tweeter. The thing is I really like my moon and dont really know if it is worth to sell.

The Crown will do well and have plenty of headroom, but be aware that OB crossover are not the same as box crossovers. There is a lot more to take into account. There is the bass loss from the open baffle and also the rear radiation of the woofer and mids along with room effects. These things combine to make OB crossover rather trick if you aren't used to them.
IME, a fourth order low pass on a 12" woofer with a normal size baffle just won't work right. It's been done, but you wind up with no real bass.

You are probably right that I would be to limited by the filtering in the crowns. Ill guess I have to continue searching for a Minidsp or something similar. The moon has HT bypass so it can be used as a power amplifier as well. Probably a lot easier to level match as well.
Drivers I was thinking about using
SB Acoustics SB34NRX75-16
SB Acoustics SB23NRXS45-8
And a Mark audio fullrange.

I haven't used those drivers. The 12 is interesting, not sure why they chose 16 ohms, maybe to put 2 or 4 in parallel? Its Qts should sound nice on a decent size baffle and it has a low Fs and claims a large Xmax. All good things on OB. It's not very sensitive, so you'll need to throw a lot of voltage at it, which the Crown can do.
Why do you need a 12 and an 8?
You might want to take a look at this thread for some ideas of what works well in simple OB speaker.
Fast, fun, Inexpensive OB project
I've built several versions over the years, including dual 15s per side with a 6.5 then 8" fullrange up top.

Yeah, they probably choose 16 ohm because the driver is only designed for open baffle so they probably knew people would use more than one per side to reach desired output.
The 12" woofer is no good over 500hz and I think that might be a little low to crossover a 4" fullrange in OB. I read in another thread here on the forum where he used the SB 8" and a dayton 3,5" fullrange in an open baffle with good results, but with a lack of low end.
I would definitely read more about your projects, its easy to over complicate things..

Yes 500 might be a little low, 700-800 Hz is usually a better fit for a 1st order crossover. But the $" fullrange is designed to play down to ~80Hz. High pass it and it likely won't run into X-Max issues. But you also want it to match well with the woofers. There are plenty of trade-offs.
