I was thinking of building some small full rangers which need a notch filter. i was going to build amplifiers in "powered monitor" style
Is there any reason not to use an active line level circuit to notch filter the audio before the power amp? It would be cheaper and can be adjusted.

One way to do it is to use a graphic equaliser type circuit which uses a gyrator as an inductor in a series RLC circuit see this thread:
