Also, this double-thyristor topology is not suitable to drive transformers, it's intended for SMPS

Right, you would need one for the forward diode and two for the negative diodes.

Wasn't thinking of using them to drive the input cap of an off-line switcher btw...but what's the point of DIY if we don't experiment...
