If you can pull down or remove socks, carefully vacuum or better yet, use compressed air and blow out all dust particles in panels. Then make sure you do not have wrinkles in mylar (under the wires), especially in the corners. You can mitigate wrinkles by using a heat gun - but be very careful you don't melt the mylar by getting the mylar too hot.
 
Yes. The heat gun to remove wrinkles is definitely last resort -

Open interface -- be careful - unplug them for a couple days to be sure low or no voltage - pull red wire from connector and touch other two connections to drain bias voltage. you may hear a crack - see a spark.

See if there are loose wires connecting onto PCB - there are two threaded nuts that hold down wires - make sure they are securely connected to PCB. I guess if you loose one stator wire connection, could cause low volume and maybe crackling?
