I have a set of Model 3's and wondered if there is a way to tell the date of the panels? I guess the later ones had a different coating or something? Serial numbers on the interfaces are 203189/190..........if that might help.
If the serial number contains any sort of date code, I unfortunately lost my Acoustat decoder ring a long time ago. And of course the Model 3 was probably produced for more years than any other model, in several different physical variations.
The shape of the interface enclosure will offer some clues as to era, i.e. early, mid or late manufacture. Please provide the enclosure dimensions, or better yet, a photo.
The conductive coating was improved a few years after acquisition by the David Hafler Co. Panels with the original coating will have a bias feed wire with either solid red or white-with-red-stripe insulation. Panels with the improved coating will have a yellow wire with a red spiral stripe.
Another major phase of manufacture involved a change to the improved Medallion Transformers. However, their presence in the enclosure is not a reliable indication of manufacturing date, since many speakers were modified after-the-fact.
