Hello
Adcom GFA-545 and GFA-5400...how do they compare?
Reliability, quality and above all, which one sounds better?
Thanks

BJT vs. Mosfet
I've got GFA 555MkIIs as well as GFA 5500, which I'm listening to right now. Each has their own sound. I think the BJT amps are a tad punchier in the middle lower frequencies, but it's subtle. Mosfets have advantages over BJTs that you can learn about, which may make them more reliable.
555 Mk I and II are bridgeable; the Mosfet amps aren't. I think the build quality of the boards is better with the 5500, but it's about a 10-year more recent design and production. It's got a more contemporary layout and parts selection. Looks like something in the Nelson Pass family, for sure. Wish it had a more delayed soft start, and some protection more than rail fuses, but that's all the old Adcom amps. The Mosfet amps will likely need new caps. Mine sounds great after a total recap and new input section transistors.
