About powering a car amp with a dual linear power supply for home use

I apologize in advance if this question can offend someone's intelligence
I didn't know where to ask and in the end I decided to ask here
The used market is literally flooded with car audio amps, even old ones but with excellent features at insanely low prices
I have just bought an Alpine BBX-T600 for only 30 euro !
I already have 5 or 6 of them at home that, not being interested in using them in the car, I thought I'd try as power amplifiers for a home stereo system
The most obvious solution is to power them with a 12VDC smps able to provide good current
If I understand correctly, the power supply inside a car amplifier takes the 12VDC and generates a dual voltage to power the amplifier circuit
I was basically thinking of using a suitably selected transformer, a diode bridge and possibly two other capacitors to bypass the internal power supply
Is this an insane idea?
Has anyone ever tried this solution?
Is it better to use a 12VDC smps that replaces the car battery?

A 12V 20A ATX PSU could work really well.

I understand it is better to power with 12VDC anyway I will study the ATX PSU option I have never paid attention to this very interesting option
I guess i have to select one with a 12V/20A output ? or different 12V output could be paralleled ?
However, for proper load regulation, it maybe necessary to load the 5V line a little.
You refer always to the ATX PSU ? a resistor ? which value ?

The circuit board is actually a Lindsley Hood amp. Nothing special. Made it in about 2009 and in the cupboard among many other things I made. The JHL was implemented with split supply. Stereo amp on a single single side board and using Lateral MOSFETs on output if I remember. The PCB was self etched at home using photo resist and Ferro chloride.

No, paralleling not recommended due to power sharing problem between multiple units.
Yes, the >20A rating on 12V is rare these days but they used to come a decade ago. Of course, any SMPS with similar specifications would do well but ATX is just something that's easily available and probably already lying around, that's all !!

i wonder how to wire them to avoid any explosion I am quite ignorant but i like the idea very much indeed
I am checking the cost to build a linear power supply and i am shocked
A 300VA toroidal costs even 200 euro It is a lot indeed plus big caps the cost escalates quickly
Could you provide me with a wiring diagram please ?

It may seem so but simply imagine a 1W avg power, you'd 100W to get a 20dB voltage crest factor (peak/avg ratio). This is what's recommended for a dynamic musical sound system at home (100W-300W).

Besides, the SMPS inside the amplifier (that does 12V to +/-35V) would eat some power along with the linear class AB amplifier in question.
 
hi sorry it is me again May i ask about the final sound ? this implementation is quite unique and fascinating
i am checking prices of high grade mains transformers and big caps and i am shocked
a good 300VA can cost 200 euro 😵
smps in comparison cost almost nothing and they are ready to use
and if they sound also good they become a very interesting option indeed

What leads a human being towards some random path, such as...
hoarding car amps.. for domestic use, that... are generally designed for 4 Ohm speakers at which it's able to put out 50 Watts at 1% thd or less (ref Alpine spec)... would translate into 25 Watts in a typical 8 Ohm load, ie a typical domestic speaker.
And to add insult to injury... or may it be labeled an amusing exploration into the exotic muses... an additional PSU is still needed.
So 6 or so car amps + PSU = 3-400 money's...!? ..yet an integrated volume control that can control all the channels is still missing, yes, smoking iou's brings satisfaction, even for the ardent audience of professor G... me included! :)
Me, I took the safe and boring route and bought a used Japanese 7.1 AV amp capable of 100w/ch into 8 Ohm for about 100 money's, and... hey, it's got a PSU and volume control (remotely operated) included, G. may offer a redeem to the pitiable frat in the mirror.. :)
 
I wanted a tiny solution for one of my rooms (background music) and ended up using a car amp bolted to the wall behind some furniture, with an ebay 12v 10A power supply bolted to the wall next it. Used a tiny cheap ebay tube headphone amp as the preamp (mainly for looks). Car amp speaker outs also go to a small Jamo sub to handle the lows. Works surprisingly well for what it is but need to sort out some relays to stop turn on / off thumps.
The power supply cost £8 delivered.
