I don't think that any of you have ever known about this.
In my early years as a machinist, I would occasionally have a problem where the piece I was machining was not rigid enough and I would have have trouble with the piece "chattering". A harmonic vibration would start and just get worse. Someone said "put some bear sh*t on it!", and gave me a clump of this weird fibrous, slightly greasy putty-like stuff. I spread a small layer of it on the underside of the piece (it sticks really good) and voila! completely dead, no vibration.
The only place I've used it has been under my subwoofer- 3 clumps in ziplock baggies. It works great. I have never used blue tack, so can't offer any decent comparison for you. Maybe someone would like to take a chance and get some and report on it?
To find it, do a search at www.mcmaster.com for "babbitt putty". It costs $21.50 for 5 lbs. 5" x 5" x 5"
