A stereo for a Mars Bachelor Pad

So, there's a thread about Musk and Mars.

I started thinking... the gravity in Mars is less than on Earth... so in my Mythical Mars Bachelor Pad... how will my stereo be affected by gravity?

I guess solid state and vacuum tubes will be fine, so will be relays... perhaps...

Speakers? Will speakers be affected? After all, they rely on mass and electromagnetic force... will the speakers become more efficient? Will their frequency and time response change? Will 100 wpc send that 12 inch woofer clear across the room?

Turntables? I figure belt driven tables will be fine as they are controlled by the belt, but direct drives will get most affected... huh?

Indeed, anything that uses "mass loading" will be affected... or will it?

I guess anything that uses "gravity" and it's effects on mass will be affected, but anything that uses mass strictly as replying to a driving force (F=ma) not associated with gravity, should not be affected. Hmm... I contradict myself? Speakers? Who knows.

That means... bearings... hmm... bearings...

I think analog reproduction is gonna be a hard thing in Mars. Not to mention transporting the 4000 LPs over there.
 
You’ll have to adjust the tracking force, for sure.

Since your little habitat will likely contain 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen at around one atmosphere, the speakers will probably sound the same. You may not have to worry as much about cone sag, though.

Cassette players can work in the weightless conditions of space, as well as on the Moon where the gravity is 1/6th of that on Earth.

NASA equipped astronauts with small Sony TC-50 cassette recorders starting with the Apollo 7 mission in October 1968.

The idea was to make it easy to log mission notes, but they could also use the cassette recorders to play mix tapes.
 
Will a Mars Starlink be an LMO constellation? For sure they can't be LEOs.

And will they fly lower, in which case it will indicate very low latency... likely very useable for Martian voice communication.

I tell ya, this guy Musk is a genius... ;-)

Will the notes float over an even more silent background given the lower gravity?

I want my shag carpeting in burnt orange with touches of gold. (Hey, I carpeted my yellow 77 Civic wagon with shag carpeting of that color. It was groovy.. man! All the way up the doors, the trunk, etc... not the ceiling though.

The real challenge will be designing and building a power system to run it at all. I suppose you could hook a generator to a bicycle to gwt a couple hundred watts, at the risk of becoming physically fit. 🙂

The stereo will simply weigh less on Mars. Big problem is that there is not enough atmospheric pressure, if any, to carry a sound wave. It's headphones in your helmet, I'm afraid.

We're talking a fully pressurized, filtered pad with a wet bar and lots of Courvoiser.

BTW, you do hear sounds on the surface of Mars, but the speed of sound is lower and high frequencies are filtered.

Naturally, you wouldn't hear that in your space suit.

But give it some hundreds of years and after terraforming the place...

Weight wise... well, a Pass Xs300 might be doable to move around the room then... assuming we could pay to ship it there.

Well, certainly there’ll be an array of Martian Starlink satellites capable of providing high speed internet for all your entertainment streaming needs.
Streaming will be about all its good for. Earth-satellite-earth already has too much latency for our (work) network security cr@p to work properly. That 32 minute delay would kill it for sure. Forget about working from home.
