A new beer thread

I don't actually drink much these days. This brew isn't for me. I'm simply planning ahead for the supplies for the wake after my funeral. But if I am drinking beer currently its "Dead Parrot Ale" from Black Sheep Brewery in the UK.
Alternatively Pilsener Urquell or Carlsberg Elephant and in summer Grolsch swing tops

At your funeral do you wish both genders to partake?
That is a big factor.
Also, what ratio of male to female consumers are you wanting to attract?
Another factor.
As a general rule, you can have a rich red colour, if you ensure a slightly sweet beer with a lower hop count and have both sides of the coin covered. Basically you’re making a beer for the ladies but the colour that tells the boys they are welcome.
It sure as heck doesn’t resemble some of the pisswater (American Budweiser) as seen at these occasions so often.

Actually, I will not benefit from that. Except if my stirs up some drama which makes them fight with each other, that would be priceless!

At my funeral? Do I get a different entrance fee for male vs female atendees? I'd love to have my funeral have a fight over the entrance fee. 😀

That depends what color is in fashion right now. Don't count if it's their taste, the women buy it anyway. 😀

I remember I've met an american in a bar ~20 years ago and he only talked to me because I was the only one who could answer anything above 'yes, no, whisky, wine, beer' 😀 And he told me a joke, he said "Did you know American beer is like making love in a canou?" - "No.. ?" I answered. He laughed and said "It's like f*ing close to water!" 😀

I've bought a Miller Lager (not light!) when the superbowl was on and a supermarket had a sale on it, I've bought a few of it. I liked it but since it was over 3x more expensive, I didn't buy it after the first time anymore, later it was on sale and just twice the price of a good local beer after the SB but since there are so many good breweries over here in Germany, I've opted for other ones. I've once bought a bud and I hated it with a passion.

Cal you bring up a good point.
I'll start looking for some high ABV White Ale recipes and try and find some pink or red bottles. Or perhaps a Belgian cherry [ Kreik] or perhaps an Apricot rather than make jam this season. I wonder what an apricot lambic would taste like?

Apparently it is possible to get crazy levels of alcohol according to Scottish brewery “Brew Dog”: High Alcohol Beer

57% seems a bit high for casual drinking!!

I’ve tried a few of theirs and they are generally good, although I usually drink ales from my local brewery “Wicklow Wolf”.

Best of luck with your brew!

Or you could try a recipe something akin to one made by the Norse Berserkers.

They used hops, malt, magic mushrooms and marijuana. Nobody wanted to meet them in battle - no matter what injuries they sustained - they just kept on coming. Just one of them held up the Saxon/Engli army on a small bridge across the river Stam. He killed about 14 Saxons before one of the Housecarls had the bright idea of using a small rowboat to come up under the bridge and skewer the berserker from underneath.

Leave out the magic mushrooms ( or not) but use plenty of marijuana. To make it sweet you could add honey. If you did use magic mushrooms it could make for a really different wake.

The price of beer across Europe now has become a very sick and expensive joke. When I had reached an age when it was legal for me to enter a pub, a pint cost about 1shilling and 10 pence - in todays money that is 9 pence. You could take a girlfriend out for a meal and drinks for just over £2 - true that was it for the week!

For any Brits or foreigners that happen to visit Brighton on the south coast there is one excellent pub called - the Basketmakers. It used to be run by a man called Blue, now it is run by his son. He instigated a high standard for both the beer and pub meals that he never deviated from.

From the door to the bar was only about 8ft - something over 2M but sometimes it could take you 20 minutes to get to the bar because you would be stopped by friends who insisted on communicating. The real ale was properly cellared - I cannot be done with all the testicles about 'craft beer' - just a way to bump up the price!

So, in 2001 (when we left the island) a pub meal for two with a couple of pints came to about £10 - now a pint is £5 (if you are lucky) and the food would be £10 each if you were lucky. My cousin Zach in Scotland helps a friend make cider, for which he gets paid in cider - this cider sells for £10 a bottle.

I live in France and refuse to pay €3 for a small bottle, 25cl of crap commercial beer in a cafe when I can buy a reasonable French real ale in a s/market for €1.39, 50cl. I bought a 50cl of IPA from a small family brewery for €2.15. I buy a 3L box/nearly 4 bottles of Cab/Sav, very drinkable for €7.99. Eating out in France used to be very reasonable - menu de la jour (3 course)- around €14 now it's €22. In the UK that can be the price of a main course. My cousin visited friends in London a couple of years ago and paid £10 for a glass of wine.

Why have prices rocketed in so many countries simple - first the price of property, to buy or rent and that includes commercial property. Germany, Netherlands, UK, Oz,NZ, the States and then Covid was a good way to ramp up prices. I've no problem with people who provide a real service or product from making money but the rentier class are just parasites. I cannot believe how things have changed since I worked and lived in the Netherlands at the end of the 70s and into the 80s. It was far cheaper to live in Rotterdam than Brighton. Freehold pubs now can and do change hands for more than £1million - insanity rules.

It seems to me a good idea for friends to get together and start brewing their own, all you need is a garage or outhouse - anyone thought about doing this?

If you think things are expensive in Europe... come check out the US. A simple, good, meal for two with just some good beer (no wine) will run you close to100 bucks. In Catalunya we were eating really good meals, with fine wine, for under 80 euros. The same quality meal in California runs 200 bucks.

Last Friday we were in Desert Hot Springs ( just north of Palm Springs ). At the bar in our sort of dumpy but historic hotel (lots of cachet - an old Dean Martin - Frank Sinatra hang out -... two double vodka tonics, one double Cosmo and a fried sample ( a nice sized tray of good fried bar food ) ran 60 bucks.

At least we get paid a lot more.

Oh, 7.3% is too low... life is too short to drink IPA under 9%.. and I don't want no fruits (or nuts) in my beer. Yikes!
