Exactly 2 years ago I bought some tweeters from Falcon Acoustics, Seas 22TAF/G for £58.80 a pair. Today to buy those same tweeters they are selling for £100.14 delivered. The cost has almost doubled in 2 years!
Going back to 2015 I bought a Scanspeak D2010/851300 for £37.90 excluding vat. That very same speaker will now cost you £56.95 exc vat (£68.34 including).
Kind of takes the shine off DIY speakers now, the price has seriously gone up!

Welcome to free money printing era!!!!
Prices everywhere seem to be dramatically rising, for all kinds of products, but the engine behind that is Governments printing HUGE amounts of money without matching matching production increase, so everybody will want more of the funny coloured papers in exchange of gtheir goods.
Inflation 101
Straight from NASDAQ, no conspiracy theories here:

- As of March 2021, COVID costs totaled $5.2 trillion. World War II cost $4.7 trillion (in today’s dollars).
- All-in money printing totaled $13 trillion: $5.2 for COVID + $4.5 for quantitative easing + $3 for infrastructure. Mountains of money cause inflation
It doesn´t get much more complicated than that.
Oh well. They can keep their high price tweeters we'll find something else.
Yes governments have a lot to answer for.
Yes governments have a lot to answer for.
You're right, Russia has a lot to answer for. At least we can still afford to eat.😉Yes governments have a lot to answer for.
Aren't you no longer in the EU? Import tariffs going up?
jeff
Haha, that escalated quickly.
This board is strictly apolitical and for good reason. Let’s keep it technical!
(Besides, a folk-critique of quantitative easing wouldn’t help anyway)

The price rises and shortages in the UK are worse than most other developed countries because of serious political mismanagement which isn't going to change anytime soon and indeed is almost certainly heading for significantly worse in the short to medium term. Obviously this is not an appropriate forum to talk about politics but British people moaning about high prices and shortages of components are not that representative of what is going on in most other developed countries where the recent economic shocks have been milder and not lead to a falling currency and large numbers of small to medium sized companies no longer finding it economical to import/export goods to/from the country or if they do having to raise prices significantly.
PS Although I tend to think of myself as European I am technically British and have watched what has been going on with disbelief.
We are currently going thru the waves of economic disruption caused by covid, CHina’s zero covid policy (greatly impacting their ability to make things), and teh current aggressive posture of Russia putting a giat exclaimation point of the issues we will likely be seeing for some time to come.
Do note that driver prices moving upward is not consistent. The Mark Audio i pay attention to are essentially the same price they were a decade ago (but the drivers have gotten better).
Higher cost of “luxury” goods is not really a great hardship given the struff many are suffering now.

You're lucky, it's heating or eating here in the UK. The new king can afford both tho 😊You're right, Russia has a lot to answer for. At least we can still afford to eat.😉
Some businesses are under pressure to generate high profits, long term it can cause great increase in profit, or winding up.
High prices are a symptom of that.
Really, Britain is in bad economic shape as per my friends who have relatives there, and the trend was clear by March itself.
Time will tell, I do not want to give a political color by criticizing the leadership, or lack of it that may have caused this situation.
The reality is that you must live within your means, not divert money into non useful expenditure.
That goes for every country, and all I can say that the pandemic was ...unexpected.
Also, go back to the situation in about Fall 2019, the economy was in bad shape, the pandemic just took the attention to itself.
All that has happened is that we are back to a situation of low demand, and reduced incomes.
Food and heat have higher priority than hobbies.
The winter season is expected to be harsh, take care.
Moderators, this thread has mildly political references.
Your call.

It's not trying to be a political thread no need to banish it. Stating facts that's all, DIY at the moment in the UK is not a great option. You can almost get ready-made speakers for the price you pay for just components, which hasn't always been the case. Just having a little say that there's been a better time to build and hearing others' opinions is good from other economic climates.
