A cassette deck recording sample.

I've uploaded a sample from my (live) recording of a choir to a cassette deck. Here is the file to download (96kHz 24bit FLAC, 67Mb). In my view is is a fine example of what a good analogue recorder is capable of.

Notes:

1) It is my own recording and the music (Rachmaninov) is to my knowledge copyright free.

2) The performance is by the CC21 Choir.

3) No noise reduction was used.

Enjoy!

Alex

Can we press an audiophile vinyl of this? 🙄😕
😎

uuhhmmmm!!! Well interesting experiment.
Did you consider recording with a Reel to Reel Tape? I mean I wonder what is the difference from your recording to for instance the well known recordings made on the master tape from Blue Note for the big Jazz back on the 50s/60s
The sound great..no question there...

Hi,

Choir music and things like voice and acoustic guitar are the
sort of things that don't show up the limitations of compact
cassette recording, rather than highlighting any real capability.

Choir music especially has no real dynamics (crest factor),
low bass or treble, and a cassette recorder can make a
decent fist of capturing the essence of the performance.

rgds, sreten.

A decent 1/4" tape system run at decent speed, 7 1/2"/s,
will slaughter the cassette 1/8" system running at 1 7/8"/s.

IMHO, the deck I've used can hold it's own against the majority of good reel to reel decks at 15 ips, both from the sound quality point of view and from the measurements side too. Add to it a much cheaper and more convenient media and you will know why I use that deck to archive my precious vinyl LPs.

Cheers

Well, at the last Whittlebury Hi-Fi show I've used another sample of that cassette deck as a second source in a ~£40K system and we were playing all kinds of music through it, recorded from vinyl. No complains about the sound quality (actually people could not believe it when the source was pointed out to them 😉 ) .

P.S.

It will not (mostly because a good cassette tape is miles better). And as I've said, the deck I've used for that recording can be compared only to a good 15 ips R2R. It runs at 3 3/4 ips though (didn't I mention that 😉 )?

When the tapes start to shed, you'll be sorry.

Decent quality cassette tapes do not shed (unlike many R2R tapes). I have cassettes recorded over 30 years ago which still play very well (unlike many of the CD's half that age). In any case, I can always re-record from the original vinyl and I can play a tape hundreds of times without noticeable deterioration in the sound quality.

how does it compare to vinyl? Let me open a little debate:

Vinyl vs Hi rez digital music! Which one is your favorite? 😱
😎

proper place? I thought so, since you posted a FLAC file of an analogue rip off!!! But it is your thread if you don't want to talk about this I understand and drop the question 🙂

BTW for completeness, CDs are obsolete, a real evaluation of the potential of a digital rig should only be done through Hi Res file DSD 8.XMHz Digital Master.
However, I do love Vinyl and don't even have digital source on my system either..

If I could post an analogue copy, I would 😉 , however there are limitations even to the mighty Internet.. .

I use digital for measurements, evaluations and occasional demonstrations like this one but not for listening to the music, as I prefer it to be fully analogue. Hence my tape infatuation 🙂 .
